Coconut Oil is the most diverse product that is advertised in the media that has a lot of health benefits for your body and hair. My parents used Coconut Oil on my head nightly when I was growing up in Guyana, South America until I moved to the United States. My parents still use Coconut Oil for many things including sickness such as a cough, cold, headaches and other things. Coconut Oil is used for treating several diseases including Alzheimer’s, heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, kidney infection, etc. Coconut Oil can also help in balancing your hormones, burn fat and building muscles.

Coconut Oil removed from hair

Coconut Oil is mostly used to remove/reduce/eliminate dandruff from hair and also for dry hair by mixing one tablespoon of Coconut Oil with 10 drops of rosemary oil. Massage the mixture into your scalp for about 3-5 minutes and leave it in your hair for about for 30 minutes or more before washing.

Coconut Oil is recommended for the hair, but some people may not like how oily their hair is and would love a natural way to remove the oil from their hair without harmful shampoos. Oily hair can sometimes look terrible, unclean and too greasy to go out.

Remove Coconut Oil from your Hair

1. Paper Towels: Use paper towels to soak up the oil from your hair when there is no other option available at present when you need to remove the oil from your hair. It might be embarrassing if there are others around but it is worth a shot.

2. Baking Soda: Baking soda is something that almost everyone has in their house (also check out our 75 amazing uses for Baking Soda).

  • Add baking soda to water to make a paste mixture.
  • Apply the mixture to your entire head/hair.
  • Leave the mixture in your hair for about 20 minutes (use a shower cap if needed) before washing hair.

3. Homemade Dry Shampoo Recipe: You can substitute cornstarch and flour with baby powder.

  • Mix rice flour, baking flour, uncooked oatmeal, and cornstarch together.
  • Sprinkle the dry shampoo onto your entire scalp in an area that is easy to clean such as the bathtub, bathroom or an unrugged area.
  • Leave the mixture on your head for about 5 minutes before brushing it off.
  • You can wash your hair immediately after brushing the mixture off your hair or later that day.

4. Aloe Vera: Aloe Vera is known for its anti-oxidants and the various minerals, enzymes, and vitamins it contains that are essential to removing oil from greasy hair. I love Aloe Vera because it is a versatile product that can be used for medicinal purposes also.

  • Mix one teaspoon of Aloe Vera gel with one teaspoon of lemon juice. Double recipe amount for longer/thicker hair.
  • Apply the mixture to the entire head.
  • Leave the mixture on your head for about 15 minutes before washing your hair with lukewarm water.

You can also apply only the aloe vera gel to your hair/head and leave it in for 15 minutes before washing it off with lukewarm water.

Aloe Vera can also be used to stop receding hairline and regrow hair naturally along with coconut oil.

5. Vinegar: Vinegar is an effective way to remove Coconut Oil from your scalp and hair, and one of the added benefits of vinegar is that it contains acid that helps to balance the PH level of the scalp. WARNING: Use only diluted apple cider vinegar or diluted white vinegar – dilute the vinegar with water.

  • Mix 2 to 3 tablespoons of vinegar in one cup water.
  • Massage mixture into your hair and scalp.
  • Leave the mixture on your head for ten minutes before washing off with lukewarm water.

The vinegar will help to leave your hair soft and shiny. This solution helps in reducing the buildup of the oil on your hair and also facilitates soft and shiny hair.

  • Beat two large eggs in a cup/bowl and then add 2 to three tablespoons of water.
  • Massage the mixture into your hair and scalp.
  • Leave the mixture on your head for about ten minutes before washing with lukewarm water.  Please do not use hot water because the hot water will coagulate the egg which will cause a mess on your head.
  • OPTIONAL: You can massage your hair with castile soap before rinsing off.

9. Mint and Rosemary: Mint and Rosemary will leave your hair feeling clean.

  • Boil two cups of water in a pot.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of rosemary sprigs and 1 tbsp of mint leaves to the boiling water.
  • Add the juice of one lemon into the pot and boil for about 10 minutes.
  • Cool mixture down and massage into hair and scalp and wash hair.

  • Apply the mixture to hair.
  • Leave the mixture in hair for about ten minutes before washing.

  • Mix henna powder with 2 cups of water to make a paste.
  • Apply the paste to your hair and scalp.
  • Leave the mixture in your hair for 2-3 hours before thoroughly washing your hair.
  • You can also add olive oil to the above mixture to create a more effective mixture.

Your hair should feel clean, soft and shiny.

14. Witch Hazel Oil: Witch Hazel oil is a product I know many people use on their face but recently found out that it can also be used to remove coconut oil from your hair.

  • Mix equal amount of beer with water – make sure beer is diluted by mixing with water.
  • Apply the diluted beer mixture to your hair.
  • Leave mixture in hair for about 5 minutes before washing.
  • You might want to wash your hair twice to get the beer smell out of your hair.

16. Honey: Imagine applying honey to your hair!!! Honey mix with egg yolks helps to rid your hair of oil.

  • Mix 2 tablespoon of honey with 1 egg yolk thoroughly – make sure it dissolves.
  • Let the mixture rest for about 30 minutes.
  • Massage the mixture into your hair and scalp.
  • Leave the mixture in your hair for about 20 minutes before washing your hair with lukewarm water.

Please do your research on coconut oils before purchasing because there are a few coconut oils that are not that natural because they have too many additives.
